Chanteh

Chanteh is one of the hand-woven fabrics of the Qashqai tribes of Fars, which is woven only by women and is used as a bag to carry and store tools such as mirrors, combs, Quran, spoons, threads and needles, and sewing accessories, and to carry food in migration. Nomadic girls and women learn to weave bags from childhood and when they reach the age of marriage, they weave high-quality bags for their families.

Chanteh usually has a woolen handle that is used to hang from a specific point or throw on the shoulder. In recent years, Chanteh has become more decorative and is used in cars or home decoration, which is often prepared in miniature designs and sizes, and used as a bag to carry various items such as Quran, money etc. Chanteh often was hang on vertical wooden poles in nomad’s tent and usually hung in a place that is far from the reach of children.

Chanteh weaving has different methods. A type of carpet texture, Kilim texture, Jajim texture, Khorjin texture and other textures are used for the Chanteh texture. Some of the motifs used by Qashqai weavers in their bags are: Peacock, Bete Jaqe, Sun Round, Ram, Bird, Eight Feathered Flower, Water Zigzag Pattern, Cross, Anemone Flower, Desert Bushes and etc.
